rtl-sdr failed to start because side by side configuration is incorrect.
Was running OK yesterday.

Try reinstalling the Visual C runtime. This error usually comes if there is some corruption in your system files.

I am not sure which of the C++ Redistributable packages is required: is it 2011,2012,2013,2015 and also update 3 or update 4
I am running vista 32 bit and I have several versions of C++ installed of 2005,2008, 2011 and 2012, I also have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6
Should the dongle be connected or not when starting the program?

It shouldn't matter if the dongle is connected or not when starting the program.

I believe the 2015 runtime should be installed. It's also possible that since you have so many installed that they may be corrupting each other. Uninstall them all, and reinstall the latest only.

The main problem seems to be a syntax error.
loading 2015 redistributable did not seem to help.
Deleted old sdr# and downloaded a new version, but it had a version of Zadig for Win7 and above.
Found a version of Zadig that would work with Vista and loaded it into SDR# and after running it all worked OK,
no more side by side error.
