Re: Who has a Discone in the Attic?

What sort of roofing material do you have?
If it is metallic, then it might cause issues.
I've a discone under a tile roof and it (seems to) work OK.

Re: Install drivers RTL-SDR on MAC HIg Sierra

I'm a bit confused by your question - the RTL devices can be used on a Mac very easily and there are many descriptions on the net as to how to do this. Drivers are generally only needed to provide a way for applications to talk to hardware devices so, given the above, that problem has already been s...

Re: Receiving and decoding asyncronous serial data

You could go that way, or how about something like the Nordic nRF24L01 which directly converts the data provided by SPI interface into a 2.4GHz signal and back again. No need for separate Tx/Rx but you do need a little programming experience if you want to 'roll your own'. I had one connected to a P...

Re: How exactly are the IQ channels supposed to be calculated/processed?

Just a point of clarification between the two posts (so far). The first post uses 'I' to refer to the 'in phase' component of the original signal. However the 2nd post uses 'i' as the imaginary number (sqrt(-1)). On a screen and reading quickly it is easy to confuse 'I' and 'i' so be careful when re...

Re: rtl_fm for broadcast am radio

The 'man' page that was the first result of a Google search shows that the '-M am' command line option is experimental. It could well be that it is not working on the version you are using. Also are you selecting the correct frequency? Most of the broadcast AM stations I know are in the 500KHz to 1....

Re: Interface Defination For the RTL-SDR Stick

From memory (when I tried to look for such information) they are a real mess.
You could use rtl-tcp and talk to it as a '.local' networked device. Also look at some of the source code for other rtl-xxx programs and see how they do it.

Re: Newbie question on demodulation

Your best bet might be to install GNU Radio and use the various demodulation blocks in there. Various programs contain demodulation modules but, unless they are open source, will generally only be available in binary form. However, if a program contains the demodulation that you require, you could b...

Re: Very weak singnal from NOAA with QFH anthenna

In the past I made a QFH according to the instructions at http://www.g4ilo.com/qfh.html and it worked well. I mention this here as it includes a diagram and description of how to connect the wires at the top. There are also lots of other example on the Internet of how to construct (and wire) a QFH a...

Re: HF Antenna for balcony

With a Mag Loop antenna, just be aware that you will need to tune them as you change frequency as they have a very high Q. If the antenna is on the balcony and you are operating from inside, this might be an issue. This is certainly true for Tx (which I know you are not talking about) but it can be ...

Re: HF Antenna for balcony

Tx and/or Rx?
Are there specific bands you are interested in or general DX?
What is the budget?
What is the radio you are connected to? (not really important but helps understand some of the above)
