If you're just using it to see signals you're transmitting locally, the HackRF should be more than good enough. It's only when you get into high performance receiving, like DXers who try to receive far away signals as a sport that you need the higher end SDRs. Or if you're getting into more cutting...

It really depends what you're looking to use your SDR for. Random RF experiments, DXing, transmitting? The HackRF has wide bandwidth, can TX but is only an okay receiver. It's a good multipurpose tool that can do it all, but not great at any one thing. So it's more for general experimentation. Some...
