Re: RTL-SDR is...a pretty bizarre experience

The original RTL dongle was a TV receiver. Someone found a way to use it as a SDR and gave away the method for free. Software writers incorporated it's use and gave it away for free. Improved versions of the dongle have been produced but they are still hobby item, far cheaper than any other SDR. A l...

Re: Finding a Weather Balloon

Presumably a radio + computer will receive and decode the APRS? Then have that in your van. If it is possible to receive with a directional antenna the exact position will be known. Tracking as you drive will give a good idea where it may land. Having said that maybe a group devoted to weather ballo...

Re: Regular change in frequency or signal strength SDR#

"the FFT goes full noise for no apparent reason, its as if a huge interference has occurred "

This is often because a big signal has come up, maybe a long way from the frequency you are using.
Reducing gain or using a bandpass filter is the way to prevent that.

Re: Newby-beginner question

For a beginner in SDR receive is probably all you need. Something like an RTL may be used in conjunction with a normal transceiver, maybe integrated as a panadaptor. With suitable software they can operate as one. See a graphical display of a band, click and you are on a signal ready to TX. 73 Alan ...

That kit is a start.
In fact some serious work is done with RTLs.
Specialist antennas, filters, preamps can improve them considerably.

Re: Newbie : listening 3Khz to 148 Khz with upconverter ?

Yes, a soundcard can be used.
I see cheap 192KHz USB are available but be sure it has an input that can record at 192KHz.
Many cheap dongles are playback only.

Also note many motherboard sound devices will work (mostly badly) at 192KHz. See if you have or can borrow something.

Re: Newbie : listening 3Khz to 148 Khz with upconverter ?

Vince, Yes you can. Results may be good or not be too good. I've used similar and a LPF in front helped a lot by getting rid of unwanted spurious signals. The antenna does not need to be big, just give a good signal to noise. The best antenna I have for LF is a discone! It was the only one I had tha...

Re: Passive radar plugin

This is old, definitely use v1337. Does this run on your PCs?
It seems the only instructions are in the zip, or maybe a search will find someone who has used it. Google finds quite a few that might be relevant.

Re: I'm losing interest in SDRs... please help

Why blame SDRs? What is the point of anything? An SDR is simply a radio. In general SRDs make different modes easier. If you are talking RTL it is a cheap radio. All radios need antennas, cheap radios in particular will need external filters, maybe preamps for best performance. You buy SDRs with wid...
