New antenna, questionable signals?

I just put up a new monopole antenna outside my house to try and improve my SDR reception. It's working pretty well with air traffic, but trying to receive shortwave and AM broadcast is patchy at best. Frequently the AM broadcast band appears like this; and audio is very distorted. Would you say the...

Recommended outdoor antenna for SDR?

Now that I've got into SDR, I'm considering getting some kind of outdoor antenna to improve reception with less interference from devices inside the house. From what I can make out, most antennas are tuned to certain frequency ranges and have very poor performance at other ranges. So what I really n...

Mystery 'drifting' signal

I was looking around the Air band at approx 132MHz on my SDR, and came across this mystery signal. It's constantly changing frequency, then every 1.5 seconds jumps to another frequency making it impossible to tune in clearly. I'm wondering if it's some kind of scrambled transmission or perhaps somet...

Masthead amplifier (TV) with SDR dongle

I've been thinking about trying my TV antenna with my SDR dongle, to see if it picks up any more signals than the simple aerial that came with it. Problem is, my antenna has a masthead amplifier on it, and there's a power unit that sends power up the coaxial cable to power it. TVs don't seem to care...

Unknown broadcast/tuning method?

I like to look around the Shortwave bands for ham radio and other mystery signals. I heard one today, and last night that was definitely a human voice - but no matter what I did, I couldn't make it sound right! The voice was always distorted (robot-like); a bit like when you're not quite on the corr...

Re: Nooelec SDR not receiving AM

I don't think the Mac version has the 'volks_profile' thing that you keep mentioning. Today I was able to receive some AM broadcasts, but something odd happened. After restarting the program one time, I heard TalkSport on 1089khz (according to car radio) but it was showing up as 1160khz on the water...

Nooelec SDR not receiving AM

I am fairly new to the world of SDR, having received the Nooelec NESDR with Ham it Up as a Christmas present. The SDR works fine with FM stations and Air band, but even through the upconverter I cannot hear or see anything that looks like an AM broadcast. I have rigged up a twin-wire antenna using t...
