Re: How do I correct all those spikes?

*Some* of those might be from the dongle itself. But I have been able to reduce quite a few spikes just by being very rigorous about the following: * Grounding. Ground your PC chassis if you can. Try to ground the dongle if you can. * Ferrite chokes. Get a whole bunch (like maybe 50 or 60) of 5 mm s...

Re: Anything New coming Down The SDR Pike?

I don't usually go to the mega hamfests like Dayton (or even HamComm a few hours away in Dallas). But are Airspy and SDRPlay making appearances at those? (That seems to be the sign that you've "made it big" in the radio hobby). I do know that FlexRadio has been at pretty much every convention I've b...

Re: Direct sampling & sub-harmonics

I doubt you will "fry" the unit unless you are sitting right next to a transmitter. You might temporarily desensitized it though. The answer to your problem is mostly "filtering." An FM trap might be a good first step. A good second step might be an HF low pass filter. And/or a high pass filter to c...

Re: Directional antenna for GSM phone tracking?

Hmm, phased monopoles. Not a bad idea.

Re: Receiving OTA Digital TV Signals with R820T2

I have a couple of ATSC dongles myself. One is a KWorld (bought at Frys) and the other is a Hauppauge WinTV. (Sorry don't recall the model numbers off the top of my head). Be aware though that with ATSC/NTSC dongles that most dongles will typically only have Windows drivers. I bought the dongles I o...

Re: Receiving OTA Digital TV Signals with R820T2

Sorry I couldn't be the bearer of better news. If DVB experimentation does ever catch your fancy: Google also tells me VLC Player works with DVB dongles (although not sure about what you'd do for drivers if MacOS doesn't ship with them; I know Linux does which is why typically SDR users have to blac...

Re: Receiving OTA Digital TV Signals with R820T2

"It depends," particularly on what you mean by "OTA Digital TV Signals." * R820T2 is the tuner. What really matters for television reception is the ADC and the format you are trying to receive. * Most dongles (your NESDR, RTL-SDR.com, etc.) use an 8-bit ADC with a maximum practical bandwidth somewhe...

[Project Suggestion]: GUI with vintage Audio/RF Oscilloscope

Hi everyone, I saw a video on YouTube for a vintage FM receiver, the SAE Mark 6, which had a tuning oscilloscope as well as a digital display powered by nixie tubes (old tube alternative to LED / LCD displays). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkCIdufSGS8&t=424s SDR#, gqrx etc. are great all-around t...

Re: Directional antenna for GSM phone tracking?

Although fwiw you have to knock off 3 db if you cross-polarize two LPDAs. It's counterintuitive (two antennas actually gets less gain than just one) but such is life. The tradeoff though is that instead of polarization losses between 0 and 20 dB (depending on orientation of the remote antenna), you ...

Re: Directional antenna for GSM phone tracking?

It might work. As for range... I'm not really sure. Never worked with GSM. I will say that an LPDA with somewhere around 5 elements will add somewhere around 6 db to your link budget. So roughly twice as far as you'd be able to receive with a dipole. More elements, more gain. Each 6 db gain is rough...
