Seems more logical to locate the antenna far away from the computer and run coax to the dongle rather than mess around with long USB cables.

The radiated signal can take any number of different paths to the receiving antenna. Reflections from large buildings are one of the culprits in cities. Sounds like "picket fencing", usually caused by multi-path constructive/destructive interference.

The first time I installed SDR#, it defaulted into a sub-folder in the download folder which was hard to locate.

The latest Windows 10 creators update disables some things presumably as a security measure. There's lots of information on the web about that problem. Google: "windows 10 creators update problems"

If it's SDR#, all the needed files may not have been transferred to the SDR# folder. Are rtlsdr.dll and libusb-1.0.dll there?
Did you run zadig.exe and install-rtlsdr.bat?

In addition to the SDR display program (I use SDR#), you would need an FSK decoding program (I use FLDigi which works for decoding amateur radio FSK modes).
