How quickly can the RTL-SDR be tuned?

I'm new to the RTL SDR ---

I'd like to know if an RTL-SDR can be configured to "scan" its 3.2 MHz bandwidth over a wider band of interest? For example 30 to 40 Mhz of spectrum?
How fast can the tuning occur? After tuning, how long until the data is valid?
Do the different versions of RTL-SDR dongles have different performance characteristics in terms of tuning speed?

Has anyone attempted a scanning application?

Have a look at the 'rtl_fm' documentation - it has a '-f' option (IIRC) that lets you scan a range in whatever step size you set.

There are a few scanning applications, mostly plugins for SDR# see

The R820T can tune pretty fast. http://superkuh.com/rtlsdr.html says "With this done you can re-tune at rates of up to 41(!) hops per second"

the problem is its quite hard to get burst and digital signals.
