USB cable used with RTL-SDR dongles.

Post by w6sz » Sun Aug 09, 2015 6:12 pm

Hi All,

If one runs the RTL_SDR dongle with low gain setting, often a large number of
"signals" appear in the waterfall and spectra displays.

Not sure what these signals all represent other than noise.

By using a shielded USB cable most of this noise will not be detected any longer.

Yeah a good USB cable is a must. You'll see spurs at multiples of the internal clock frequency of 28.8 MHz, and at the USB frequency of 480 MHz regardless of what cable you use. But strong broadcast signals coming in through the USB cable can be reduced with a shielded cable.
