Unknown broadcast/tuning method?

Post by Tom41 » Wed Jan 02, 2019 11:03 pm

I like to look around the Shortwave bands for ham radio and other mystery signals. I heard one today, and last night that was definitely a human voice - but no matter what I did, I couldn't make it sound right! The voice was always distorted (robot-like); a bit like when you're not quite on the correct frequency or are using the wrong sideband mode. But I tried all the different methods of receiving including SSB, AM, FM and Narrow FM, and also tuning around the frequency but it was still distorted! Any of you come across signals like this? How is it possible to tune in clearly?

It could be the tuning that is off.

Try tuning in very small steps.

I have found, when I get that 'StarWars' sound (in the scene in eps4, where they blow up the DeathStar, the radio-com sounds just like detuned SSB :) ), that detuning usually helps clear the sound.
A few tens or hundreds of Hertz off to a side usually does it (I use SDRsharp)

Hello:

Some of the overseas stations have really bad modulation.
