Dongle Case Temp. When Running ?

Post by Robert11 » Wed May 15, 2019 10:33 am

Hello,

Have a new RTL-SDR.Com Dongle.
DVB-T+DAB+FM+SDR

Came in a metal silver case.

Can't get over how hot it is running.
Can't be good for it, but perhaps it is fine ?

A bit scary, though, and am reluctant to leave it like this, On, when I go to sleep. Do you ?

How "safe" is it" ?

Do any of you folks attach any kind of heat sinks to it ? Think this is a good idea to do ?

Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

It's fine. The case acts like a heat sink to keep the dongle working at it's optimum operating temperature and it should be warm. I run mine 24/7 for ADS-B and I have no issues.

Yep the temp is fine and safe. Remember that metal feels hotter to the touch compared to plastic because the heat transfer between skin and metal is significantly better.

The metal case being hot indicates that the it's working well as a heatsink. In the plastic case models the heat is kept inside the PCB, resulting in a much higher temp.
