Post by Cyric30 » Wed Dec 16, 2015 11:32 pm

Hello All im attempting to setup SDR to receive AIS info on map and also weather reports and mapping.
i am very new to all this and it seems most of the info im finding is out of date or im not smart enough to get it working, could someone point me to the programs that i need and any up to dat tutorials that will help me out, the sheer amount of info and programs is incredible as to what you can do, but also a bit confusing.

Can anyone lend a a newbie a hand.?

Our tutorial is still somewhat up to date: http://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutorial ... p-tracking.

But right now i'd recommend using the newer AISDeco program from http://xdeco.org.

What type of weather reports are you looking for? NOAA voice updates, weather satellite images, HFFAX Weatherfaxes?

Hello Thank you for the reply

AISDeco, does not seem to be up right now?
As to the weather reports, i had wanted to get weather satellite images, But HFFAX and Weatherfaxes seems very promising to.
im still learning just how versatile this little bugger can be.

thank you again for your help

Hmm not sure what happened to their site, hopefully it comes up again soon. I couldn't find another copy of AISdeco2 online.

For weather satellites we have a tutorial here too http://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutorial ... te-images/, though the Orbitron part is out of date, but you don't need that to just get started. There's also a tutorial we saw recently at http://init.sh/?p=275, that includes steps on downloading from Meteor M2 satellites.

If you want weatherfax you'll need an upconverter, or to perform the direct sampling mod for the RTL-SDR. I recommend using the SpyVerter upconverter.

Hello Again

I found a copy of AISdeco2 here (its in Russian so, Ya for Google Translate)
http://forum.adsbradar.ru/f39/konsolnay ... alov-1686/

I think there's directions to, just have to read through it.

Ive seen the Up-converters, thought it would be interesting to pick up SSB radio with one., but im not familiar with the Direct sample mod your talking about?

will look at the SpyVerter you are talking about.

For direct sampling see: http://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-direct-sampling-mode/

Note that you'll need good soldering skills to do this, and risk breaking your dongle. An upconverter is the recommended method, but direct sampling is good for electronics experimenters.

For your reference, they are (as far as I know)

Open source:
rtl-ais
AISDecoder
rtl-ais for android

The above three have some connections.

Free but not open source:
PNAIS
AISMon
Aisdeco?

Non-free but you can still use freely:
Shipplotter
AISRec
AISRec for android
