Just set up a nooelec sdr with up converter and am having problems receiving.Altough i'm getting signals i think i need a better antenna.
But to save purchasing a expensive one is it possible to use a ATU with long wire instead?

Yes what i've seen commonly done is long wire -> 9:1 unun -> antenna tuner -> rtl-sdr. The 9:1 unun should already help a lot with long wire reception even without the antenna tuner.
