Newbie needing help ?

Post by Gorby928 » Fri Jun 20, 2014 6:00 pm

Hi all
Well I have ordered and recieved my RTL TV stick and I wish to install a SDR package.I am running a Linux OS flavour of Ubuntu based on 12.04 LTS 64bit version. Now I use linux but I rarely go into the terminal unless i have to (grab video etc).I could really do with help on choosing the right SDR package and then a pointer to a easy step by step installation guide. Thanks in advance.

For a beginner on Linux i'd recommend GQRX, which is a standard SDR GUI (git install instructions are on that page too). I wouldn't bother with GNU Radio unless you are looking to do some serious signal processing work.

As for Linux driver installation the instructions are on the official rtl-sdr page

This is what I did, in case it helps:

1. Installed rtlsdr from source (installed cmake first with apt-get install cmake)

2. Installed pyrtlsdr ( (git clone .......)

apt-get install python-pip
pip install pyserial

3. Install Kalibrate-SDR:
apt-get install libtool autoconf automake libfftw3-dev
git clone
cd kalibrate-rtlgit
./configuremakesudo make install

kal -s 850 (or 900, depending on which country you live, check your GSM band)
then: kal -c <strongest channel from above output>
Note down the offset

Make sure everything works:
rtl_test -t

Should tell you your stick model etc.

You may need to remove the kernel module if it complains about not being able to lock the device:
sudo rmmod dvb_usb_rtl28xxu
