Home-brew USB, VFO tuning knob.

Post by sacentre » Wed Mar 17, 2021 10:38 am

I just finished this USB tuning knob today so here are a few photos. All it consists of is the guts of a $5/- mouse using just the scroll wheel encoder and a few other bits I had knocking about. Luckily, I had the big black plastic knob left over from an old piece of photographic kit.

All that was necessary was to reposition the encoder to be parallel with the PCB instead of at 90 degrees to it and then modify the spindle of an old VR to drive the encoder. The original red optical encoder LED (LED1) has been replaced with a small green one on the top panel (just because I like flashing lights).

All it does is what the mouse scroll wheel would do so it will work with any software on any platform that can use a USB mouse.

Thanks, Joe.
So nice to have a VFO knob to turn and so easy to do. The only problem with it I realised afterwards was the rotational direction was wrong - clockwise = frequency down and vice versa. There's a tweak to the Windows registry that can reverse the direction of a mouse scroll wheel but this didn't work for me for some reason. In the end, it was easier just to turn the PCB over.

I decided to do an upgraded version using the same mouse innards but retaining the optical mouse function and L/R buttons.
