Very First RTL-SDR project: hand-held spectrum analyzer

Post by mom » Thu Sep 29, 2016 5:03 pm

Hi gang,
I'm new to the forums and to RTL-SDR! I'm really excited to be here It looks like a great community full of helpful and experience people!
Here's my first ever RTL-SDR project. I slapped it together after I was considering purchasing RF-Explorer. I also needed a FM Broadcast band and 950mhz band spectrum analyzer for my job.
I've got to say rtl-sdr has really sparked my interest in HAM, I've got the bug I suppose. I'm learning all I can and strung my first single wire antenna last night, no I need a AM broadcast filer!
Anyway here's all the parts I used for my little project:
1)old samsung note 3 (no root)

3)RF Analyzer App (android) https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... yzer&hl=en

4)RTL2832U Driver for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ndro&hl=en

4)usmile's 100k-1.7G RTL-SDR (i'm still trying to figure out how to setup SDR# to work with the upconverter on it. (I don't see a crystal other then the 28.8 on the dongle inside) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0142 ... UTF8&psc=1

5)USB-OTG cable with power option https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V8 ... UTF8&psc=1

6)RAVPower portable battery pack +-27,000mah https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012N ... UTF8&psc=1

7)old sma antenna from a 2.4Ghz wifi PCI card I had laying around. woks well enough for FM-Broadcast band if you're close by

8)double sided-tape to hold everything in place

Very nice. How long does it stay running with that power pack? I would assume at least one day?

You might also want to try other apps on Android like SDR Touch and the ADS-B ones.

Thanks!
Good question! I haven't tested that, but I just discovered the Note 3 disables charging while in OTG mode :( So the phone dies after a few hours of use. The tuner keeps on trucking after that though! So If I turn the phone off, it will recharge the phone.

I'm going to try a note 3 specific OTG cable and see if it addresses the chargin while in OTG mode problem. I may research charging while in otg mode and see what else I can do.

The dongles have a very high power consumtion. I test 7 different types ( E4000 and R820T ). It starts from abbout 90mA , if the SDR program is NOT running, to 180 a 210mA if the SDR program is running. For a smartphone, this is very high. Is better for a tablet with big battery. However, reception with a short portable (homemade or not) antenne is dramatic or very poor. Outside buiding, it is a little better, but not far so good as a decent outside antenna. on1bes project pages.
