Beginner HF/shortwave Antenna Recommendations?

Post by j2812 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 2:15 pm

Can someone please recommend me a simple/easy/compact/portable antenna(s) to receive 10 meters, 20 meters, popular shortware? And AM broadcast would be nice too.

Want something easy to get started, and doesn't have to be cheap.

Might a loop antenna be good to get started with?

Definitely a loop antenna. Just saw this today http://www.crosscountrywireless.net/loo ... lifier.htm, otherwise the MLA-30 might still be decent too.

So what does "Portable" mean for you?
I hve the MLA-30 at Home Temporrary installed on a PVC Pipe.

For HF best thing is a MiniWhip active antenna. But works only outdoors.
For VHF/UHF best thing is a coax antenna like the FBK-70 antenna.
All on my website on1bes (Google it).

Disagree regarding miniwhips. Even if you get it up high outside, and grounded properly, they are very noisy if you live in suburban/city environments which most people do. Loop antennas are much better in these cases.

Disagree with you point of view. I place several Miniwhips in a problematic noisy environt with success. A loop antenna is a magnetic antenna, and can not work inside house or also outside in a noisy environment. I'ts just a sort of tuned loop (filter).
The MiniWhip is an electrical antenne, of which it is known that it strengthens better outside the electrical field, and keeps the magnetic field more in-house. Seach for the technical notes of PA3FWM.
The miniWhip is also used by SDR Radio Twente NL, and is one of the best. Look for SDR Twenthe http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/.

I disagree too, magnetic antennas work also well indoor.

There are two types of magnetic antennas:

1.untuned loops of one or more windings with or without ferrite core and
2. tuned single Loop with a circu mference of<1/4 Lambda for the highest frequency to be transmitted/ received

loop type 2 works very well in door for transmit an reception, because they are a high Q ( Q>100) resonan t circuit. unless RFI is directly within the reception Passband of the tuned Loop they are suppressed Sufficiently to allow even bad receiverS ( e.g. TS20) to receive on 40m.

loop1 work to but will pic k up a lot more RFI like any other an tenna whichis not tuned and has a narrow bandwidth.
