DIY suggestions for 120-130Mhz AM

Post by mattypantaloons » Mon Dec 23, 2019 4:47 am

What are you guys using for antennas? I'm using a 2m/70cm Diamond X-50 (in a 3rd floor room off of a balcony), but wondering if I should try any DIY rigs to access other worthwhile bands? Also, would the X-50 perform better on the balcony instead if just inside it?

FWIW, the only thing of interest I've heard so far has been aircraft on 126.9Mhz AM. I don't see a huge difference in reception with my SDR/X-50 than I do with my scanner/rubber ducky. Anything I can build that targets ~126Mhz?

I have a 10Mhz to 12Mhz Wilson 1000 antenna as well, but can't access my roof til Spring. Not sure if it would be worth sticking to my 3rd floor balcony railing or not (?)

Are you on the top floor or do you have another balcony above you? If yes this will significantly influence antenna pattern and I would opt for a 1/4 wave ground plane with thick tubing to increase bandwidth. Any antenna with higher gain will limit the width of your antennas elevation lobe, since gain requires either azimuth or elevation to be limited to achieve the gain increase.

What did you expect to receive? 117.975 - 137 MHz is allocated by ITU worldwide (region 1 to 3) to Aeronautical Mobile Route Service for Air Traffic Control purposes, transmitter in aircraft and on ground use DSB AM and a few channels for data links. 108.00 to 117.975 Aeronautical Radio Navigation Service all transmitter are on ground, (D)VOR, ILS, and just a few GBAS (D8PSK).
