Moving Room information

Post by snifftheglove » Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:46 am

Hi All,

Been using my V3 RTL-SDR for a couple of years now with a Moonraker Skyscan Antenna.

The Moonraker Skyscan Antenna has a RG58 cable according to the specs, so I presume it's also a 50ohm BNC.

I am moving room so going to make an extension cable and I have several spare BNC connectors here at home in my electronics box but don't know if they are 50 or 75ohm.

So perfection means using 50ohm BNC but on this simple setup what would happen if I happens to be a 75ohm BNC instead.

For receive only operation, it won't matter at all which connectors you use when fabricating your extension. Depending on the brand of cables, you may find the O.D. of RG-58 (50 ohm) smaller than that of RG-59 (75 ohm), so keep that in mind when fitting the connectors. A wrap of tape may be needed on the RG-58
to increase the diameter in order to fir the 75 ohm connectors snugly.
