What's the most straight forward way of updating a current Raspberry Pi install without reflashing the entire SD card?

Unfortunately that is the only way to update it if you want the extra Pi specific things we added in later versions like connecting to a hotspot.

If you just want to update the software, you can just use git to download the latest version, but keep a spare copy of run.sh to copy over the Rpi specific parts.
