New Ham with a few questions (KerberosSDR, Raspberry PI, upconverter)

Post by kh959034 » Fri Mar 19, 2021 2:33 am

Hello, I've been licensed for about a year and I'm looking to learn new things.
I just ordered a KerberosSDR, which is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.

I have been reading through different forums and articles, and have a few questions.

1) I've read that some people have had issues getting the Raspberry Pi 4 to run the required software for the KerberosSDR. I've also read that there have been known issues with the Pi3 when there's not enough distance between the Pi3 and the SDR. The manual section of the KerberosSDR says that the Pi 3 or 4 should be used, and I'm wondering if one is more or less prone to working properly (easier to setup) than the other? (excluding the P4 8GB, because the manual says to avoid the P4 8GB version).

2) Has anyone experimented with SUP2400 upconverters on the KerberosSDR? Are there any tutorials on this that someone can point me in the direction of? I ask this aside from the tutorials on the rtl-sdr stand alone units, which I've already read through, and I'm looking for it being applied to all of the SDRs in ther Kerberos.

I am also a ham, though not a new one.
I have a RPi4 2GB, and the KSDR.
I have not been able to get the RPi4 to communicate with the KSDR

I have: The Type C power supply provided with the RPi4.
Batteries that provide [email protected], 30000mAh
Numerous power cables including brand new ones.

I have set up the mobile hotspot on my phone and two computers.
all of the devices will connect to the RPi4 and bring up this screen:
Configuration & Spectrum/Sync?DOA Estimation/Passive Radar
This is the way the IP needs to show: http://192.168.137.195:8080/init
http:// not https://

The reason I say that the RPi4 is not communicating with KSDR is:
Everything reacts the same whether I have KSDR connected or not.
The KSDR has a white LED indicting it has power.
The KSDR has a blue LED indicting it has a connection to the RPi4.
The RPi4 gets warm, the KSDR remains cold.
I have disabled firewall and security settings on every browser,
Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome.

I have downloaded and installed every update to RPi that has been suggested in this forum, no change.
I have installed the Putty and WinSCP programs, and learned some linux commands.
So far, nothing that I have tried will get the KSDR to respond.

The Pi 4 has more processing power than the Pi 3. I've used the KSDR with both, but had an easier time and less crashes with the Pi 4 (2GB)

Unless you have a way to feed 4 up converters from a single local oscillator, you'll lose all coherency in your signal. Once you lose that, using it for DF is useless.

As for power issues, shorter cables will solve the problem better then "more amps" from a power supply. All the cables I use are 12in (30cm) and I have no problems with power.

Can you try connecting a screen to the Pi 4, and seeing if it boots to the desktop?
