Re: How to buy an SDR chip
Google the chip number and see if any the parts house have any for sale ,also you can buy a cheap dongle and scavenge the part from it .
Re: How to buy an SDR chip
I have tried that several times but I keep getting flooded with results about the dongles. Buying a hundred dollars worth of dongles and attempting to scavenge them kind of defeats the purpose of it being inexpensive...
I was hoping that someone in this community has had some luck with this before.

You won't find them for sale on the general electronics parts stores like Digikey. Our manufacturer gets them directly from the source. You might have luck inquiring on Alibaba, but they'd probably want you to take thousands.

Thank you @rtlsdrblog !! I have had great experience with the dongles and software on this site for my personal use but I want to use some kind of similar chip for a university project.
Has anyone had good experience with other wideband SRD chips?

Re: How to buy an SDR chip
Just use the correct search terms such as "RTL2832U, chip, for sale"

Re: How to buy an SDR chip
in my opinion, RTL2832 is a bottleneck. It works well for 20 dollars dongle receiver.
But if you want something better it will turns into the weakest part of your device.
It has small dynamic range, it has bad IMD, it has spurs, it has too small bandwidth...
It even cannot utilize all parameters of 820T/820T2 tuner.
I think it's better to use some real RF frontend, for example based on LTC2165 and some small FPGA for DDC.
It will give you professional level of parameters for your SDR
