NooElec NESDR SMArt - Error: Cannot access RTL device

Post by jullit31 » Tue Jan 30, 2018 5:31 pm

Hello,

I'm currently trying to use SDR# on Win10 pro x64 with a NooElec NESDR SMArt. So far I downloaded and unzipped SDR# and ran the install-rtlsdr.bat and zadig.exe. Everything completed whithout any errors.

When I start SDR#, the device is recognised correctly:

However, I cannot move the RF Gain slider. A few seconds after pressing Start i get a Cannot access RTL device error pop-up.
I tried this several times on two PCs with USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, always with the same result. Of course I also rebooted. What am I missing? (I'm new to SDR, so it may be something so obvious that it's never mentioned...)

Thanks in advance, Julian

Drivers look okay. If it's happening on two separate PCs then it might be a hardware fault.

One thing to try first might be to disable Windows automatic driver updates. Sometimes this can break things.

Also double check the rtlsdr.dll is inside the SDR# folder.

I also helps to have more than one RTL device available to test, to see if the problem is with software or with hardware. I had one of the smaller NooElec devices get hot and fail.

Tried and checked, to no avail...

I also tried installing it on Ubuntu 16.04 following these instructions. Running rtl_test gave me:

Thanks for your help, I guess I'll contact NooElec now...

I know its been a month ago you made your entry.
Whenever I see that reg read /write stuff on rtl_test. To me , it means you've got low voltage getting to the dongle.
Plug it into an active usb hub.
I've seen this a few times...always the fix
