Upgrade from an rtl-sdr dongle?

Post by James_from_France » Sun Oct 28, 2018 2:40 pm

Hello,

I enjoy playing with my RTL-SDR v3 dongle for VHF and UHF but I would like to listen to HF. With the direct sampling mode, I can't receive much. I think that there's too much interference.
What is the best way to listen to HF when you live in a town, with very little outside space for an antenna or a long wire?
What do I need to receive HF as well as the online websdr's?
If I want to upgrade my RTL-SDR v3 dongle to a better (and more expensive) one, do you recommend the airspy mini with an upconverter or the rsp1a?
Thanks for your answers.
Regards,
James

Trust me here in Europe its very hard to get an Stable HF Reception.
You can get some ""nesdr" from here: https://www.ebay.de/usr/nooelec?_trksid=
I dont know if the have an build in bias t.
If the have i can sell you some upconverter and Filter who I also use.
You need an Antenna for example an TECSUN AN-200 or AN200 on Ebay and If you dont want the Cable your Self the Cable for the antenna. (After 2y i gave UP and ordered the Cable from US).

Hello and thanks for the reply.
I don't think that the "nesdr" is any better than the RTL-SDR V3, which is already a very good sdr.
An upgrade to the RTL-SDR V3 dongle would be something like the airspy or the sdrplay.

You can buy a HackRF from China: https://www.ebay.de/itm/HackRF-One-1MHz ... rk:30:pf:0
I can recommend to buy a HackRF with an Alu, Metal Case. :D

Methinks the Airspy HF+ is a very good SDR for HF.

Traditional MW receivers normally used a ferrite antenna, and I wonder if something like that could be used with the HF+.

I would suggest getting a MFJ 1020C pre-selector. It works very well with the RTL-SDR V3, I used one on till I got HF+

A HackRF isn't very good for HF. If you're after top HF performance, the best affordable option at the moment is the Airspy HF+.

If you want wideband VHF/UHF operation too, then maybe consider the SDRplay RSP1A or RSP2. HF performance is a bit of a step down though.

The Airspy HF+ dongle has a couple of things that I don,t like . 1 it does have a fold over problem on HF that can be worked through.
The other problem is that the HF+doesn',t have any gain control for the VHF part and their is no UHF . Now Since I like to surf
the HF air waves the HF+is every thing they say it is .

Hello,

Thanks for the new answers.
In the end, I bought an Airspy mini and a spyverter r2. For the moment, I haven't got a suitable antenna for HF. I would love to have reception like the one :http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901 . I tried a long wire in the attic without much success, just noise ! Maybe I need a 9:1 unun or balun (the thing from Nooelec !).
My spyserver is running with the airspy mini : sdr://82.242.88.125:6000. (the blue dot in the north of france on the airspy directory page : https://airspy.com/directory/ ). If you like it , let me know at rtlsdr at free.fr.

Regards,

James

Hi James ,
for a HF antenna I am using the metal flashing on the eaves of my house and it gives me a 255 ft of horizontal loop antenna . If you do view image The pictures will come out right side up .
