Is my RTL-SDR v3 dead?

Post by RFShibe » Tue May 22, 2018 4:55 pm

All of a sudden my Win10 computer recognizes the dongle as "USB Composite".

SDR# won't work and SoapySDR says there are 2 RTLSDR's , yes I have tried updating/reinstalling drivers , yes I have tried both CubicSDR devices.

I've even tried using it on a different computer running Ubuntu and no luck.

The latest Windows 10 creators update disables some things presumably as a security measure. There's lots of information on the web about that problem. Google: "windows 10 creators update problems"

Did Windows do any updates recently?

In Zadig do the dongles show up in the drop down menu? Some people have reported that suddenly the have to uncheck "Ignore hubs of composite parents" in Zadig now to be able to see the dongle entries, so possibly Windows has changed the way USB works recently.

Did the dongle work on Ubuntu previously?

I thought the same thing a while ago, but since I have 2 cheap SDRs, both of them breaking at the same time is exceedingly unlikely. Turned out that a few weeks ago Windoze installed some Realtek drivers and that broke the realtek based SDRs -- they just would not work any more. I had to do a system restore since I could not find any other way to uninstall that driver.

Will zadig.exe replace bad drivers with good ones?

Good question; however, I did not try that. I presume it would, but I can't be certain without trying it. Luckily, I had some older restore points lying around.

Yes zadig simply replaces the currently installed driver to the WinUSB driver, which is required for RTL-SDR. Often when Windows does a big update it'll force it's Windows TV drivers, overwriting the SDR drivers which can be annoying. In those cases you just need to run zadig again to reinstall the WinUSB driver.
