RF input level

I've been thinking of trying a direct connection from (dual band UHF/VHF) handheld radio directly to the NooElec unit, but I am curious what the limit of RF input it can handle. Would even 1W from a handheld overpower or possibly fry the unit? If not would it handle 4-5W?
Otherwise to get a fairly accurate picture of signal output of the handheld without connecting it directly, what would show me the most accurate signal display? I have various antenna options available, most of them homemade resonant for 2m, but also a Tram 1185. How far from HT to antenna would give me the most accurate display of signal received?
I've already been using it to receive local broadcast FM radio, as well as local ham radio signals from a home brew external antenna that is typically connected to a 2m radio. Yes I have my ham radio license.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think 1 W would already be way too much for a direct connection. If you look at the R820T datasheet (http://superkuh.com/gnuradio/R820T_data ... locked.pdf), you can see the max input power is 10dBm (0.01W). You should also be careful how close you transmit to the antenna, since the max input is pretty low.

I'm not sure what you mean by the most accurate signal? As long as the signal isn't too powerful to either fry or overload the front end, then you should be seeing the correct signal.
