Identifying a Device's Transmisssion Frequency

I have a RTL2838 from rtl-sdr. I would like to identify the frequency a particular device is transmitting on. My initial idea is to use the rtl_power command and move the device away (10 to 20 miles) from the PC with the dongle is attached and look for frequencies that show a power reduction.

Is this a sensible method?

Is there an easier way to accomplish this goal?

If rtl_power is the right way, any suggestions as to the correct command parameters to scan the whole range available on this device effectively for this task?

What device is this, and why do you need to move the device so far away? Can't you just turn it on and off?

To identify a device, i'd first look for any FCC markings etc, and check the ISM bands.

Well at first we should know where he is coming from and what device it is.

Normally the Manual show the Freq range. If its a ISM Freq there is not a real huge Freq Range.

Sorted in order of price
absorption meter,
frequency counter,
oscilloscope or
spectrum analyzer available can detect or meassure transmitt frequencies.
