Kali Linux 2019 and Bias-T

Post by Yasniel CL6TC » Tue Sep 10, 2019 2:45 pm

Hi, I tell you that I have a rtl-sdr.com v3 dongle and it works perfectly in Windows 10 when I activate the bias tee. But in Kali Linux 2019 it is not like that, every time I execute the command ./rtl_biast the biast is enabled without problems and I can check the output of the sma connector of the dongle 4.5 volts, but when I run applications such as gsm or gr-iridium deactivates the dongle voltage and of course, the GPS patch antenna does not work. I hope you understand my comment. I hope you can help me, because I am very interested in decoding the signals of the Iridium satellite system. Greetings to all.

What version of librtlsdr does Kali run? I'd try uninstalling it, and installing it from source. Probably the version you have in Kali is setting all GPIO to zero initially for some reason.

Since Kali is debian based, it may be the same issue that I am seeing on my SatNogs station (Raspbian). Apparently the bias-t switch only works with with certain libraries (as rtlsdrblog has mentioned). If your Kali version is based on debian buster, then it should work. If not, you'll need to do some package updating. Unfortunately that's about the extent of my knowledge.

You can see more about this in the troubleshooting forum, under the thread about the bias-t and SatNogs.

Hi, thank you very much for responding, very grateful. I am currently running Kali Linux 2019.1 with librtlsdr ver.0.6-2 and I have installed the rtl_biast from the rtl-sdr.com site.

I believe 0.5.4 is the first release that allows the use of the bias-t, so you should be ok.

Thank you. So what do you advise me, that I stay with that version, or try another older one? I don't know what else to do, thanks for your help.
