Direction Finding brainstorm- log spectrum via Doppler antenna system?

Post by N8RDF » Fri Nov 22, 2019 6:20 pm

I too am trying to develop an automated DF (stationary nodes) network. I'm considering the traditional APRS RSSI and/or Doppler approach, but had a further thought: If a basic SDR dongle and monitoring app (FM mode) were set up to log a chunk of spectrum, but while using a Doppler antenna system, the doppler would induce an audio tone on ALL logged signals, right? The direction of any logged transmission could be determined after-the-fact?

There's the issue of how to synchronously log the antenna array phase as a reference and the Doppler wavelength spacing limits would have to be observed. (And yes, I understand the issues of using a doppler while stationary :D ). But implementation details aside, does the basic premise make sense?

Is your Doppler antenna b asis really large enough to get an audible tone?
