RTL-SDR v3 Q-branch not working need help

Post by KC8DVE » Fri Jan 24, 2020 5:58 pm

Hello all and thanks for reading. I first purchased the the RTL-SDR v3 last year. At the time I received it I went through the setup guide and followed it to a T. The Q-branch didn't work then so I pulled it out of the usb port and threw it into my junk box note NO previous experience with SDR. So now 1yr later with some knowledge in the SDR radio transceiver I own I thought it would be nice to try the RTL-SDR again. This time on a different computer and different antenna. Currently running the latest version of Windows 10 and I am using a 20m tuned vertical and a 2m tuned vertical for the SDR. On one computer running HDSDR and SDR# on the other, doesn't make a difference. The dongle works fine on the 2m portion I can here local and distant repeaters with no issues. Then I will select the Q branch and tune to 20m, nothing! As you can see in the pics I have provided there are plenty of signals on the band as pictured with my transceiver. Now I have multiple antenna's and was able to use 1/2 watt transmit power out of another antenna 25 feet away. The SDR did receive that broadcast and on the correct freq. I get 20m signal strong on the transceiver definitely strong enough for the dongle. I have tried it with the RTL AGC on and off nothing changes. Is there something I'm missing in the settings? Is it possible the Q-branch is defective if so is there a test to find out? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

The HF input LNA might have failed. Do be very careful if you're transmitting near the dongle, as you could destroy the input LNA by having high input power on the antenna.

That said, if if wasn't ever working it probably failed elsewhere. In that case please contact us for a warranty replacement [email protected].
