NOAA and Raspberry Pi Help

Post by NateS » Tue Mar 24, 2020 11:35 pm

I recently put together a QFH and am trying to use my Pi to collect images automatically using this https://www.instructables.com/id/Raspbe ... -Receiver/ tutorial. I am running into some issues, and this being my first RF project, I am not sure what to do. Here is a link to some of my results https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing. I have only had one good image labeled "good image", and even that one has some issues, mainly the black vertical bars, but I can't seem to get consistent results, is this the SDRs fault, the code, my location?

My setup may be unique, as that it is in a waterproof pelican case, I have a build log here: https://hackaday.io/project/169083-noaa-lb-cd. I have the Pi running the code from the tutorial and it can also be viewed in the "predict" in the google drive link.

I have tried adding ferrite cores to the USB cables and coax line. I believe the antenna is working properly because I can receive radio stations and the local NOAA 162.500 Mhz and was able to get the one good image. I tried both indoor and outdoor operation of the antenna with no avail. The only other thing I have not yet tested would be driving to a local park and trying to get some images, away from the house.

If there is anything that I am missing, or if there is something that I need to do with the code from the tutorial in order to make this work, as it is intended for a Noelec SDR, please let me know! I would greatly appreciate it.

Looks like you're getting good signals. The black bars look like an audio issue, perhaps the Pi is dropping audio samples? The entirely black images, no audio got through to the decoder. I'd say that something is probably wrong in the setup of your software.

Ok, I am glad the signal is good though. I will try and look through the scripts again to see if I made any mistakes. I've seen RTL-SDRs used with Pis, so I know (I hope haha) that what I am trying to do is possible. Thanks!
