USB over-current

Post by threeifbyair » Fri Sep 18, 2020 6:52 pm

Just got my RTL-SDR v3 from Amazon yesterday. Excited to get going with it!

Except... the moment I plug it into my Raspberry Pi, my keyboard and mouse lock up.

Turns out that the Linux kernel is reporting "over-current" in /var/log/messages and basically shutting down the entire USB subsystem because it's drawing too much current.

Things I've tried:
(1) Many reboots
(2) Starting the Pi with the dongle plugged in and plugged out
(3) Disabling dvb_usb_rtl28xxu (the kernel originally started out by reporting that it had that attached, so I know it recognized the radio!)
(4) Disconnecting the antenna to see if that made any difference
(5) Searching these here forums to see if anyone's seen it before

Nothing so far. Do I just have a dud? Is there something totally obvious that I've missed?

Must be a short circuit fault somewhere. The old high current issue with some of the silicon chips doesn't exist anymore, but it could still be a loose piece of solder or something inside the enclosure. Email us at [email protected] with the order details and your address for a replacement.

I got it from Amazon and they sent me a replacement today. Looks good, now to delve more deeply into this stuff!
