Newbie Question: Computer System Requirements

Post by UncleVinny » Fri Oct 23, 2020 5:45 pm

Newbie here, so please pardon the "Duh!" factor.

Are there any computer system "must-have" for the SDR to work?
Specifically . . . I have an old laptop and an old desktop both running Windows 10,
but relatively slow clock speed and and not connected to the internet.
Will using the dongle on those present any problems, or do we need a specific
clock speed, say over 2 gHz?

Also, is an internet connection required?

Thanks in advance for responses.

Try it.
I cannot remember anyone saying their computer is not good enough for a RTL dongle.

The requirements for merely showing that an RTL-SDR works are very low.

Even an old Raspberry Pi 2 is plenty fast enough to run simple SDR code for a 240k wide spectrum and do some airband (etc.) scanning. I use a Raspberry Pi 4 for WSPR decoding, which requires a bit more CPU performance. However, higher sample rates for wider spectrums, fancier waterfall graphics, and more advanced demodulators require more CPU power.

So the answer depends on your choice of software, bandwidths, and modes.

Thanks for your help guys.

Did some research:

1. YES, you DO need and internet connection - - you need to download and install several programs, extract them and run them.

2. YES, you need a relatively modern operating system. The SDR software doesn't work with earlier OS versions, such as Vista. Not sure about Windows 8, but Windows 10 is good.

You only need the files, maybe on a USB stick. The computer does not need to be connected to the internet to run a SDR.
There is SDR software that runs on XP, HDSDR, a version of SDR# is available and an old version of SDR Console. OS is not critical for basic operation.

Thanks, Alan!
I stand corrected.
Wow, so much to learn about this!
