RTL-SDR Receiver (Bluebox) does not want at all.

Post by GuentherB » Fri Oct 30, 2020 4:08 pm

Hello everybody.
I bought one of these RTL-SDR 2832U devices for little money to get into the world of SDR. I am aware that I will not achieve great success with such a small box. According to the description, the device should be able to receive from 100kHz to 1.7GHz. The usual short magnetic base antenna is included. It should probably be enough for strong incoming channels.

The problem now is that I can't get the device to work at all. No matter which SDR software I use (HDSDR 2.80, SDR Console 3.0.25, AIRSPY SDR # 1.0.0.1769), no software recognizes the receiver.

I always followed the instructions exactly to install the corresponding DLLs and to install the WinUSB driver with ZADIG 2.5. I have read here and in other forums for days.

The process is almost always the same: I connect the receiver to the USB (2 or 3), hear that Windows has noticed the device and then start the software. At the same moment I hear that Windows has logged the device off again.

I don't know what to do wrong or where the problem is and I hope for your help.

The following hardware and software is available here:
CPU: Intel i5 4570 @ 3.20Ghz
Mainboard: Gigabyte Z87-HD3
RAM: 16GB DDR3 / 4 * 4GB Kingston KHX1600X9D3)
Graphics: Intel HD 4600 (OnBoard)
Windows 10 Pro 20H2 64Bit

(I am not a native speaker of English and have translated the text from German into English with Google Translator. Please do not use colloquial language or technical jargon / abbreviations when answering. Otherwise I will unfortunately not get it translated into German without errors. That would be a shame.)

Thank you for taking the time to read.
Guenther

Unfortunately i'd have to say that the windows disconnect sound happening when you start the dongle would probably mean that the dongle is faulty. That brand/type do have a very high fault rate from what i've seen.

You can also try using a high quality USB cable. Sometimes the cables that come with those boxes are junk quality.

Unfortunately, it's a mini-USB and not a micro-USB connector. Fortunately, the friendly dealer around the corner still had such a cable for me and so I changed the cable and lo and behold: That was the mistake. The supplied cable was defective!

Now everything is working and I can start to familiarize myself with the matter bit by bit.

And again it has proven to be true: if you buy cheap, you buy twice.

Thank you for your answer, you saved my day.
