Anyone had success with Cellphone frequencies?

Post by TomGalletti » Fri Nov 27, 2020 3:29 pm

I'm thinking of deploying a KSDR to scan for cellphone frequencies (800MHz for 4G), and get a DOA whenever a phone call is made locally. Has anyone had any success at these frequencies, or will I just end up getting the DOA from the closest cell tower?

In most places they use time division, which means that the uplink and downlink are on the same freq. They just each transmit at defined times very rapidly. SO you'd need some way to filter out the times when it's the downlinks turn which is not easy.

But if the frequency division scheme is used in your area, then uplink and downlink frequency bands are on different frequencies. In that case, if you knew the cell phones uplink frequency it could work.

GSM is a lot easier, as it's always frequency division.
