This is ambiguous:
5. Plug Ethernet cable from your router/switch (I can do that)
and wait for 10-15 seconds to allow you RPI get configuration from DHCP server.
(How would I know if my RPi is getting a configuration?)
(and what is the DHCP server?)

6. Connect to the RPI via SSH (use Putty, etc). L: pi / P: raspberry
"Use Putty, etc" what is that?
And what is this: (L: pi / P: raspberry)

Keep in mind that some, if not many of us are using RPi with no peripherals.
No display, No mouse, & No keyboard.
We expected to burn the image to the SD card,
insert it into the RPi,
make the connections to KSDR and hotspot,
and have the setup working.

We have to rely on the support of the community to troubleshoot issues like this themselves unfortunately. We're a small team working on this part time. I can only put out what works on my setup, and hope that it works everywhere else too.

Issues like the Pi firmware becoming incompatible on some boards are difficult to control as i've been unable to replicate the issue on any Pi4 that I own.

That said we're hoping to have eventually be in a position to be able to hire someone more full time to work on issues that crop up over time when things like Pi4 firmware changes.

password requested upon reboot?

I did all of the downloads that Eika listed.
It took hours, then asked for a password on reboot.
I am still using pi & raspberry, but that did not work.
It was 5 AM, and I could not take any more.
Next day when I tried again, pi would bot boot up at all.
Formatted the SD card and started over.

You Sir (EIKA) are my hero for the day !

Upgraded to a Pi4 8GB, failed to boot on 1.6.1. Followed your instructions and success on first attempt.

With this significantly more powerful unit I hope I can move forward now with my project.
