RTL-SDR Radio Receiver for Chrome

A new RTL-SDR Radio Receiver app for Chrome has been released. The source code can be viewed at GitHub. The app is currently capable of receiving broadcast FM stations and scanning between them. To run this app you will need to have the Chrome web browser installed or be running a Chromebook laptop.

Note that at the moment there seems to be a bug in Windows Chrome that prevents this from working.

Radio Receiver is 100% written in JavaScript, but is nevertheless fast enough that it can run on a 2012 Samsung ChromeBook laptop at full quality.

Features:

* Stereo FM.
* Scan for stations.
* Unlimited slots for presets.
* Supports the International and Japanese FM bands.

New DAB Player for RTL2832U

A new Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) player has been released for RTL2832U dongles (Link text is in German use Google Translate to translate). This player uses the official drivers and not the RTL-SDR drivers, although we believe the DAB demodulation is still done in software. You will need to install the drivers provided on the download page to run this DAB player. For R820T models, the Treiber2.zip file should be used and for E4000 Treiber.zip should be used. You will also need have installed the Visual C++ Redistributable package to run the program.

The software UI is written in German, but its controls are easy to figure out for non speakers.

An alternative DAB player that uses the RTL-SDR drivers is SDR-J.

Transmitting DAB with the HackRF

A RTL-SDR.com reader has written in to let us know about his project involving transmitting Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) using GNU Radio and the HackRF. DAB is a digital radio technology that is used to broadcast radio stations. He uses the CRC-DABMUX and CRC-DABMOD software to modulate an audio file into DAB and then uses a GNU Radio python script to write the modulated signal to the HackRF for transmitting.

TVSharp Updated to Version 1.2

The PAL/NTSC analogue TV viewer TVSharp has recently been updated to version 1.2. This new version features an updated GUI as well as automatic frequency correction and automatic position correction. This may correct some of the scrolling and slanting problems seen in previous versions.

The latest TVSharp can be downloaded from here.

Word of warning: Chrome recognizes the download as malicious, however I have downloaded the file using FireFox and scanned it with Microsoft Security Essentials which found it to be clean.

Video Tutorial: Hak5 on Decoding RDS with GNU Radio and GR-RDS

Hak5 has recently posted another video continuing their easy to follow series on GNU Radio and the RTL-SDR. In this video they talk about Radio Data System (RDS) and explain how it is a digital signal that is embedded in broadcast FM signals. They then download GR-RDS, a GNU Radio based RDS decoder program and use it to decode a local RDS signal.

GR-RDS: An FM-RDS Receiver for GNU Radio which supports RTL-SDR

GR-RDS is a GNU Radio program which can be used for the decoding of FM RDS data with the RTL-SDR. It has recently been updated to support GNU Radio 3.7.

RDS is an acronym for Radio Data System, which is used in FM radio transmissions to embed information such as radio station and programme/song information. Some conventional FM radios display this information on an LCD screen.

One the authors of GR-RDS has also recently posted a video on YouTube showing it in action with an RTL-SDR source block.

Comparison Between Portable Shortwave Radios and the RTL-SDR

YouTube user mutezone has uploaded a video showing a comparison between several portable shortwave radios and the RTL-SDR. His results show that the portable radios performed better than the RTL-SDR dongle at shortwave-dxing, however we are unsure of what method he used (direct sampling or upconverter) to get access to the shortwave bands on the RTL-SDR.
